13 February is the World Radio Day — a day to celebrate radio as a medium; to improve international cooperation between broadcasters; and to encourage major networks and community radio alike to promote access to information, freedom of expression and gender equality over the airwaves.
In this regard, in the UN House in Almaty, UNESCO Almaty Cluster Office jointly with the United Nations Information Office in the Republic of Kazakhstan, in cooperation with the online radio: Radiotochka.kz, al-Farabi Kazakh National University, KIMEP University, IT University brought together broadcasters from Central Asia, journalism students, UN agencies, Media NGOs, and female bloggers.As radio continues to evolve in the digital age, it remains the medium that reaches the widest audience worldwide. It is essential to furthering UNESCO’s commitment to promote gender equality and women’s empowerment.
Messages of the Director General of UNESCO and the UN Secretary-General's have been presented.
Panel discussion, organized by UNESCO, brought together editors and leading radio stations to promote gender equality through wider thematic radio broadcast.
Key themes of the discussion were:
- digital environment, environment and prospects of girls participation
- promoting safety of women radio journalists
- eliminating stereotypes and promoting multidimensional portrayal on radio
- Radio reporting
- Talk show on digital radio
- Tips to make a career in radio
