16 March 2017The International Day of Women and Girls in Science is celebrated annually on 11 February since its declaration by the UN General Assembly resolution in 2015. On 15 March 2017 UNESCO Almaty Office and UNESCO Chair on Sustainable Development at Al-Farabi Kazakh National University, in cooperation with the UN Department of Public Information and UN-Women, organized an event dedicated to the International Day of Women and Girls in Science and celebrated on the occasion of the International Women's Day.
The event took place at Al-Farabi Kazakh National University in Almaty, Kazakhstan. The agenda of the event aimed to raise awareness about the existing programmes, initiatives and projects supporting women and girls in science and providing opportunities to encourage women in promotion of their scientific research, as well as to popularize science among youth. Researchers in the field of natural sciences, representatives of international organizations, NGOs, and universities were invited to participate in this event.
During the event UNESCO Almaty provided a brief overview of global data on women scientists and their fields of research, based on the UNESCO Science Report and the interactive tool “Women in Science” developed by the UNESCO Institute for Statistics. Representatives of the Shakhmardan Yessenov Science and Education Foundation (Almaty, Kazakhstan) shared information on various academic opportunities provided by the Foundation to students and researchers, including academic exchange grants, scholarship programs, research internships and other initiatives.
During the second part of the event a panel discussion with women scientists, working in the field of natural sciences, including biology, ornithology, chemistry and geology, was organized. The panelists shared their experience in making a career in science and gave some useful advice to young people, while the rest of participants had an opportunity to ask them questions about the challenges and stereotypes they faced in this endeavor and relevant opportunities.
